Mission, KS – In early September 2019, IAC was contracted to design, construct, commission and operate two (2-8TPH) hemp drying and bagging facilities. IAC completed both projects, in parallel, with an expedited design, procurement, construction and commissioning activity that only allowed a 6-week project completion window, due to crops needing harvest.
IAC Applications Engineering Manager Luis Castano is back with another Tip of the Month for baghouse design. In this month’s tip, Luis explains the meaning of air-to-cloth ratio in optimized baghouse design, and its relation to both air velocity going through the filters, and interstitial air velocity going between the bags. All three parameters are important to consider in order to have your baghouse operating at peak efficiency.

In last month’s Tip of the Month Video, IAC’s Luis Castano, explained the importance of the solenoid position on a pulse valve and how it affects the efficiency of the pulse jet cleaning system in a baghouse. For this month’s tip, Luis highlights the importance of the size of the pulse valve.

After a successful Baghouse 101 In-Plant Seminar was given by IAC’s Director of Business Development, IAC began working with an industrial sand plant to find the cause of a recent decrease in their productivity. IAC was then hired to complete an Engineering Inspection of the facility by IAC’s Plant Optimization team of engineers. The team formed an extensive report outlining the issues the customer was having and provided solution options.
Working with various industries over the last couple years, IAC has been successful in creating and implementing Respirable Crystalline Silica (RCS) Mitigation action plans to help reduce silica dust exposure in work environments and surrounding areas to comply with new silica regulations. Recently, IAC’s RCS Mitigation Plan proved to be successful for a brick manufacturing facility. Working closely with the customer, IAC completed post plan and installation testing. Upon following up, IAC and the customer found that the plant’s silica exposure levels are now well below the action level.
In January of 2017, OSHA revised the industry regulations pertaining to fixed ladders and fall protection. Previously, OSHA standard 1910.27 covered fixed ladders, and it required cages on fixed ladders where the climb is over 20 feet (6.10 m) high. With the 2017 revision, fixed ladders were moved under OSHA’s standard 1910.28, which amends the rule on height so that fixed ladders will only be required to have fall protection if their height is greater than 24 feet (7.3 m) above a lower level.
A pulse valve in a pulse jet baghouse system needs to fire with force and speed in order for the system to run as efficiently as possible. With a pulse valve, the air in the system is pressurized and contains a solenoid valve that releases the pressurization, which in turn releases the compressed air into the blow pipe.
